Pilvi Ahtinen
Craft teacher and TWB volunteer, MA

My name is Pilvi Ahtinen and I have a master’s degree in education at the University of Helsinki, majoring in technology education. I have also studied industrial design (B.A) and now I am expanding my knowledge by studying for a master's degree in service design.

With eight years of professional teaching experience in the field, I have gained experience in design thinking, technology education and STEAM teaching. Currently, I work as a design and craft teacher at the comprehensive school. In addition to my teaching role, I train craft and design teachers and mentor teacher students.

I have previously worked and studied abroad. The latest experience I have gained in Uganda (2023) where I worked as an education advisor through teachers without borders network. In Uganda, I trained teachers at the refugee settlement while building teachers’ capacity in a functional, play-based learning approach.

I love to be near nature. I often find myself walking or skiing through the forest. I also like to relax while cycling and kayaking. Nature has a calming effect which I truly appreciate.

Mia Halme
Documentary filmmaker and yoga instructor, MA

I have graduated with a Master of Arts degree in film from the University of Arts and Design Helsinki and have been a documentary filmmaker for over 20 years. I have also worked as a lecturer and professor of documentary filmmaking at the same university. As a teacher, I found mentoring and creativity exercises essential, as I believe they are necessary for everyone. With the film students we completed exercises in the forest, and used, for example, dreams as part of the film development process.

As a director, I combine the knowledge provided by research with artistic expression. My films are characterized by acceptance and appreciation, whether it concerns humans or other creatures of nature. The subjects of my films have ranged from children in foster care to Sanna Marin's government, but the approach has been unified by a respectful perspective. My latest film ‘Fabulous Cow Ladies’, completed in 2024, is a half-hour forest bath that tells the story of three cows living in a forest pasture.

I am also a trained yoga instructor and passionate about practicing modern dance. I try to include bodily knowledge into my work as a film director. My favorite is teaching a yoga class in the forest!

Animal-assisted mind coach and nutritionist, MSc

In my training you will dive into a peaceful presence and you will feel connected with nature and animals. You will get tools for your personal stress management and well-being as well as our teaching in and out of the classroom. After my session you should be able to use nature- and animal assisted tools in your own work and you know where to find more tools to do so.

I am Nutritionist (MSc), Stress management coach, Forest mindⓇ coach, Animal assisted coach and Garden therapy coach. My session will be arranged at my home farm in Loppi. Our farm is mainly a forest environment with horses, sheep, chickens, dogs and bunnies. We have build and are still building the environment to support the well-being of humans, animals and nature equally. Responsibility and environmental issues are high on our priority list because I believe we are one with nature and that without nature we are lost.

Almost all my activities I do at work and free time involve forest, culture and animals. These things keep me grounded and healthy and my safe place is always with horses, especially with the herd. I welcome you to join us to explore your true nature and find new ways to bring nature into your teaching.

Tiina Seppälä
PhD student and educator, MSc

I have Master’s degree in Animal Science and I’m currently a PhD-student in University of Helsinki and the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources. Horse nutrition is the main subject of my Thesis. Throughout my studies, I have been interested in the natural behaviour and welfare of domestic animals.

I work as a farmer in our family farm, Pelto-Seppälä, which is over 300 years old. Our farm is home to almost 100 mother cows and their calves, who live in the cowsheds, where the cows are kept in groups and unchained through the winter time, and on the pastures in the summer. All our cows are fed with products from our own fields. We try to provide our animals resources for natural behaviour the best way we can. Besides cows, we also have ten horses living in our place, mostly the national cold-blooded Finnhorses.

For me, animal welfare is not just the absence of negative aspects, but also the animals ability to have positive emotions. The most rewarding part of my job as a farmer is to see the cows and the horses able to live in herds. I’m grateful to learn to read their behaviour - as part of nature’s creatures. Animals are, like scientifical studies have shown, the best mirrors for our own mind and emotions. It is not just us and them. We have a connection- whether we see it or not.
