Description
Throughout the course, participants will:
- Discover Kökar’s medieval heritage and island traditions as resources for place-based teaching.
- Hike through archipelago landscapes, gaining tools to integrate outdoor learning into diverse curricula.
- Engage in creative writing inspired by nature and history, with practical techniques for classroom use.
- Spend a school day at Kökar’s primary school, gaining authentic insight into remote education and island children’s learning environments.
- Reflect on how nature and local history can support inclusive, cross-curricular teaching approaches.
- Observe birds and explore how nature-based learning can also enhances observation and engagement skills in students.
This course strengthens teachers’ capacity to design meaningful, experiential learning while broadening their understanding of student perspectives in non-urban settings.

This course enhances teachers’ capacity to create experiential, cross-curricular learning rooted in history, nature and creativity.
Participants will:
🔹 Connect past and present by exploring Kökar’s historical sites as teaching resources.
🔹 Develop skills for guiding students in nature-based observation.
🔹 Strengthen creative writing abilities through methods easily transferable to classroom practice.
🔹 Apply outdoor learning strategies that support reflection and student engagement.
🔹 Deepen sensory awareness to foster attentiveness and curiosity in learners.
🔹 Gain insight into remote schooling through an immersive visit to Kökar’s local school, expanding their understanding of diverse educational contexts.
🔹 Use learning-by-doing approaches to build teaching confidence through hands-on exploration.
🔹 Course Fee: 80x5= €400: Covers the training sessions + the round trip from Helsinki, as well as transportation on the island.

If you have the opportunity to read and watch a novel or film related to the Finnish archipelago / the Åland archipelago, it would bring an additional dimension to the course content, but there may be problems with availability with translations...
